Technical Editing

Does your document deal with complex or challenging subject matter? Is it targeted at a specialized readership? Does it make extensive use of charts, figures, tables, and other graphics to support the text?

I have many years of experience editing graphic-filled and data-heavy documents, including lengthy reports for research institutes and user manuals for educational and psychological assessments. As a technical editor, I bring an “intelligent reader” perspective to the material. I identify and query inconsistencies, unsupported statements, and other problematic issues; simplify the language, as necessary; and ensure consistency of data in text and graphics.

Stylistic Editing

Does your multi-author document lack a cohesive writing style? Is the text dense, wordy, or difficult to follow? Is the tone or writing level inappropriate for the target readership?

I have addressed stylistic concerns in reports, books, and manuals written by one or multiple authors and am skilled at improving the clarity and flow of the text, establishing a consistent style and tone, and revising the sentence structure and vocabulary to better suit the intended readership. I generally perform stylistic editing as part of the copyediting process when a “heavy edit” is requested but can provide it as a separate step.

Standard Copyediting

Does your document need to be checked for grammatical errors, the mechanics of style (punctuation, spelling, capitalization), consistency of terminology, bias, permissions, or other matters?

I have copyedited a long list of trade books and academic texts, as an in-house editor and a freelancer, and am familiar with various style guides. I have also been successful at establishing cooperative relationships with editor-wary authors.

Citation Editing

Does your document make extensive use of citations? Do the in-text citations and the references list need to be cross-checked for omissions and inconsistencies? Are the entries in the references list inconsistently formatted?

I have performed citation edits on a variety of documents, including a research report with over 700 citations. I bring a keen eye, a detail-minded sensibility, and a meticulous approach to this critical task.

Manuscript Evaluation/Consultation

Does your document need a fresh pair of eyes? Is it an early draft that needs guidance and a revision strategy? Is it a later draft with persistent, difficult-to-resolve issues?

As a developmental editor, I assessed manuscripts for content coverage, relevance of content, writing style, use of visuals and graphics, marketability, and other key factors. I can assist in determining if a manuscript has production potential and, if so, provide revision recommendations.
